What to Expect During a Filling

The process is straightforward and typically completed in a single visit. The decayed portion of the tooth is removed, the area is cleaned, and the composite resin is applied in layers. Each layer is hardened with a curing light before the next is added. Once complete, the filling is shaped and polished to match the surrounding tooth.

Are Composite Fillings Right for Me?

Composite fillings are a good option for most patients with small to medium cavities. They are also commonly used to repair chipped, cracked, or worn teeth and to replace old silver amalgam fillings that are failing or no longer preferred.

Because the resin bonds directly to the tooth, composite fillings work well in visible areas where appearance matters, including the front teeth and areas that show when you smile. For larger areas of decay or teeth that experience heavy biting pressure, Dr. Meza may recommend an alternative restoration such as a crown or inlay.
